Survival Chic Says - Be Sure to Prep... but do it with Style

Plain ol Prepper Stuff...number 1

So it has been a while since i wrote a prepper article.  When i started over 10 years ago it seemed there weren't many sources or ideas so I wanted to share what I knew...... But,now there seem to be .. .too many..?   But as usual I see a few holes so here are some that i think are useful.

Salt... simple to get at a feed store

5 Prepper items to tuck away

1.   Hardware cloth  - If you are asking what is this ? you are already on the wrong blog.   Hardware cloth comes in a lot of sizes but I like the rolls of 8 inch wide by 36.   It is useful for plugging an eve to keep wasps out,  be wrapped around a drain or tucked in along the edge of things where you don't want critters.  Of course bigger sizes can be attached to the bottom of raised beds, chicken coops and whatnot.    Wadded up it stops mice BETTER than steel wool and lasts longer (steel wool seems to compress, rust and fall apart on our ranch).

2.  Salt.  Everyone has this on their 'list'... but really.. go to the local feed store.  Get a dozen white salt licks for  $4.00 or less.. for a 25 lb lick.  and put them in an old feed barrel (most bulk feeds can be had in 250 pound bulk containers if you want it to be somewhat 'clean')...NOW you have cheap salt you can use to salt meat, make whatever... OR.... don't worry about dirt...WE actually just stack them... they have been stacked in the dry corner of a barn for 20 years... so the corner of your garage looks fine to us...

3.  Solar re charger for your car battery - these are dirt cheap and they work.   Will we get a massive EMP that fries everything so they are useless anyway... who the heck knows????  But, in the meantime our truck has a heck of a set of diesel batteries so a trickle re charger that I put on the dash board just makes sense.

4.  Hand tools you can fix...   I want you to think about that sentence for a moment.   I have a bunch of old hoes and shovels I picked up at various sales that were made (or remade) oldshool  from parts. You want these because you can  rebolt on new handles or hoes or shafts.   Without a LOT of work you can remake  new tools.   Watch for these at farm sales

5, Sledge hammers and breaker bars.   Everyone knows what these are.. but have them.  Why?  Try digging a post hole without a breaker bar in the dry season.  Try splitting wood or freeing up your main (or only) ax without a sledge and a few wedges.   Try squaring greenhouse or post and beam framing without a sledge.

Be Prepared
