Prepper Notes on Making Essential Oil bug spray (and vodka)..

How to Make Essential Oils... or medicinal booze on your kitchen counter....

I have been asked many times.... how did you learn all the things you know?  I usually reply... uh i got a book... or nowdays i say... 'i watched a youtube video'....

I use this stylish Italian model cuz it works
great for distilling lavender
It is pretty easy to learn new things.   My current pet project is distilling essential oils... How did i come to this?

I live on an old ranch.  It is primarily Redwood post and beam construction with a bit of plaster lath on inside walls.  Where we have remodeled there is now sheetrock and we have added some good long lasting (and not bug friendly) insulation.

Which brings me to the why on the essential oil thing...  IT started with  BUGS...   We are organic here.. and we even try to avoid things like 'bleach' if possible.  However, when you have an old place you have critters.. that is just the way it is.   So, I jumped on the internet and looked up making essential oil bug spray.. which got me to how to make essential oils.. which got me to.. 'hey.. this is just like making vodka..'  he he.

Turns out this stuff is dead easy....

All you need is a handy countertop still...  there are modern ones.. AND i found a couple of cool pictures of old timey ones.

These are just flat out cool old stills

You can get ready to go ones right from the maker
(see the name on the can?)

Or you can buy Table Top versions that work with your stove on Amazon

If you have read this far here is a partial list of things you will end up distilling in a SHTF situation

  • Some REALLY REALLY Strong vodka (think painkiller and disinfectant)
  • Essential oils from Cedar as a mosquito repellent (and you can spray this on in closets to keep moths out
  • Essential oils for Garden Bug spray.  I like peppermint, Chrysanthemum (citronella), geranium and pine.  There are properties in the geranium that are natural killers.
  • In stronger concentrations they are a natural disinfectant for surfaces (they will burn your skin however so not for wounds)
  • Certain Oils linger so Cedar and Rosemary keep wasps away etc.
  •  I havent done it yet.. but you can make a mean wine port too... (uh medicinal)
  • Distilling CBD's from Cannabis works and there is more research all the time on this herb
  • Distill other herbs and plants for medicine like Mullein for a cough syrup.. see the vid below (not me.. and not distilled either but you can distill it...... just a good video)

Happy Distilling
